Homemade Bread

This week I baked (pink!) homemade bread, cut the slices into fun shapes, and made delicious finger sandwiches out of them! These are perfect for a little girl's tea party, but let's face it, grown-ups will love them too!

I simply followed the instructions for the classic white bread recipe in my Oster Bread Machine manual, but made sure to add some food coloring!

When making bread, it is important to add the ingredients in the proper order (wet ingredients first, dry ingredients second, and yeast last) and with very precise measurements. I pre-measured all of my ingredients and set everything out in a way that would help me remember what order to add each of them (except I accidentally forgot the salt for the picture!) Also, make sure that all of the ingredients are at room temperature before adding them to the bread pan.

Ingredients:
1&1/3 cups water
4 teaspoons softened butter or margarine
4 cups bread flour
2 tablespoons sugar
4 teaspoons dry milk
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons active dry yeast

For each cup of flour that you measure do the following: scoop up a heaping cup full, tap the cup with a knife two times to help release air pockets, then use the back of the knife to scrape off the excess flour, making it level.

Add the wet ingredients - water and butter - to the bread pan. Notice I added the food coloring (about six drops) to the water in a separate bowl before pouring it into the pan.

Next add the dry ingredients - flour, sugar, dry milk, and salt - to the mixture. (Second picture is me holding the pre-measured salt I forgot to include in the other picture earlier, haha!)

Use your finger to create a well in the center of the dry ingredients to fill with yeast.

Put the pan into the bread machine, press start to let the magic begin, and in three hours you'll have delicious bread! Use this time to tend to the rest of your party preparations!

Once the bread was made and sliced, I used my princess cookie cutters to cut the bread into whimsical shapes!

For this tea party I wanted to make kid-friendly finger sandwiches so I didn't do anything too crazy! I made cream cheese with apricot preserve sandwiches, crunchy peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwiches, and turkey and cheese sandwiches. All were a hit! However, like I said before, you can make these colored, cut-out finger sandwiches for adults who are young at heart too! In that case though, you could choose to add other sandwich fillings to suit more mature palates.

Isn't it fantastic when the foods you serve double as decorations for your party? You'd be surprised just how much the colors and shapes of the sandwiches add to the table! Also, it is so satisfying using your own homemade bread!

Spooky Tea Party

My latest tea party was frightfully delightful! I asked my friends if there was a theme they would like for my next tea party and they chose 'spooky'. Since it was still summer at the time, I was careful to not include specifically Halloween/fall time details such as pumpkins. Another one of my goals was to make this event feel eerie and dark, while still maintaining a tea party-esque atmosphere, adding touches of elegance amongst the gore! I set the table with these cut-out sugar cookies that are made to look like decapitated people. (Yikes, maybe I should have put a trigger warning at the top of this post?) I used a Christmas gingerbread man cookie cutter, sliced off the heads before baking, and then added some red icing after they cooled to look like blood. For the second dessert idea, I made red velvet cupcakes and decorated them with dyed pink buttercream frosting to look like brains! My favorite of all the food I served were the "finger sandwiches"! (Get it? S...

Sips by

I was so excited last Christmas when my aunt surprised me with a year long subscription to Sips by ! It's an amazing company that puts together boxes of teas to send directly to your home, personalized with your taste in mind. Since I had such a great experience, I thought I'd share some of the information in case anyone is looking for clever gift ideas for the tea lovers in their lives! When I started it at the end of last year, I was prompted to fill out a little questionnaire on their website so that they could get a sense of the types of teas I like and dislike. They used that information to help determine what to include in my boxes. I was pretty open minded when answering the questions, so I ended up with a wide variety of options. That is exactly what I wanted because it gave me the chance to try teas that I might not have normally purchased myself! Below is a glimpse of what the boxes and their contents look like: Each box came with 4 different kinds of teas to enjoy an...

Murder Mystery Tea Party

I have always wanted to do a murder mystery themed tea party because I thought it might be interesting to combine elegance with just a touch of horror! So this week I finally went ahead and organized one! Special thank you to my mom and dad for helping me with the story line and other details! And thank you also to my grandma, sisters, and the D'Angelo family for attending and participating! For this event I kept the menu relatively basic by preparing simple finger sandwiches (egg salad as well as cucumber) and a fruit tart. To add to the theme, I iced some sugar cookies with black question marks. My mom used the same black icing to draw the outline of a body on top of the cake, but added some colorful flowers to balance out the gruesomeness. ;) The setting was a high school reunion! In attendance was a tough-girl bully, perky ex-cheerleader, glitzy celebrity, exhausted mother, successful business woman, cafeteria lunch lady, and drunken teacher. Each of these party ...
