Tea Party Invitations

Happy September! I've already been thinking ahead for an autumn themed high tea party I am going to be hosting later this season. First things first, invitations! This was the perfect excuse for my mom and I to have a craft night together this weekend! We decided that we would each get to come up with a design for the invitations! However, we wanted them to be mostly similar to each other (in color and style), yet not exactly the same! Meaning we could use different prints, or arrange the embellishments differently, etc...

My mom and I each chose a paper with similar, warm, fall colors and then two solid colored pieces of card stock to accent the prints.

A lot of the embellishments that we used were already in our craft supplies. That's one thing I really love.. coming up with ways to use what you have in order to create something you are envisioning!

We started out by sizing, cutting, and layering our papers. We both used one of our pieces of solid color card stock as the actual card, folding it in half. Next, we took our other piece of solid colored card stock and cut it just a little smaller than the front of the card and pasted it there. Then, we cut the paper with the print slightly smaller than the second piece of card stock and pasted it on top.

To add decoration, we decided to emboss! This is such a fun take on rubber stamping. There's just something about it that seems so elegant! If you have never embossed before, it is simple to do! All you need is a rubber stamp, embossing ink, embossing powder, and an embossing heat tool, all shown below.

Once you've rubber stamped onto paper using the embossing ink, you sprinkle the embossing powder all over it, dust away the excess powder, and then heat until it creates a metallic look. For this project, my mom and I both cut out a small piece of our colored card stock to emboss the tea pot rubber stamp (which is from Hobby Lobby if you are interested in purchasing one for your own tea party invitations!) onto the front of our cards. We each used another piece of the same card stock to emboss the fall leaf rubber stamp a few times for the inside of the cards.

We both used the little flower adornments, but my mom chose lace ribbon, and I went with a paper doily. I love how these look like a set, but you can see they are both still very unique!

Here's what the inside of the cards look like. These particular invitations are for close family so we didn't get very specific with the information as you can see, but typically, you'll want to include more details like the address for the event, contact information to R.S.V.P., etc... Also, consider signing or initialing the back of the card as to show that it is handmade and to give credit to yourself.

Finally, I would like to recommend using clear envelopes. It's the perfect way to show off your work! And who wouldn't love to receive such a beautiful piece of art in the mail?! Simply write your guest's address and the return address onto a piece of paper the size of your plastic envelope and slip it inside on the back side of the card. Stick a stamp on it and it it's good to go! And then flip it over to admire your card even on the way to the mailbox!

Spooky Tea Party

My latest tea party was frightfully delightful! I asked my friends if there was a theme they would like for my next tea party and they chose 'spooky'. Since it was still summer at the time, I was careful to not include specifically Halloween/fall time details such as pumpkins. Another one of my goals was to make this event feel eerie and dark, while still maintaining a tea party-esque atmosphere, adding touches of elegance amongst the gore! I set the table with these cut-out sugar cookies that are made to look like decapitated people. (Yikes, maybe I should have put a trigger warning at the top of this post?) I used a Christmas gingerbread man cookie cutter, sliced off the heads before baking, and then added some red icing after they cooled to look like blood. For the second dessert idea, I made red velvet cupcakes and decorated them with dyed pink buttercream frosting to look like brains! My favorite of all the food I served were the "finger sandwiches"! (Get it? S...

Sips by

I was so excited last Christmas when my aunt surprised me with a year long subscription to Sips by ! It's an amazing company that puts together boxes of teas to send directly to your home, personalized with your taste in mind. Since I had such a great experience, I thought I'd share some of the information in case anyone is looking for clever gift ideas for the tea lovers in their lives! When I started it at the end of last year, I was prompted to fill out a little questionnaire on their website so that they could get a sense of the types of teas I like and dislike. They used that information to help determine what to include in my boxes. I was pretty open minded when answering the questions, so I ended up with a wide variety of options. That is exactly what I wanted because it gave me the chance to try teas that I might not have normally purchased myself! Below is a glimpse of what the boxes and their contents look like: Each box came with 4 different kinds of teas to enjoy an...

Murder Mystery Tea Party

I have always wanted to do a murder mystery themed tea party because I thought it might be interesting to combine elegance with just a touch of horror! So this week I finally went ahead and organized one! Special thank you to my mom and dad for helping me with the story line and other details! And thank you also to my grandma, sisters, and the D'Angelo family for attending and participating! For this event I kept the menu relatively basic by preparing simple finger sandwiches (egg salad as well as cucumber) and a fruit tart. To add to the theme, I iced some sugar cookies with black question marks. My mom used the same black icing to draw the outline of a body on top of the cake, but added some colorful flowers to balance out the gruesomeness. ;) The setting was a high school reunion! In attendance was a tough-girl bully, perky ex-cheerleader, glitzy celebrity, exhausted mother, successful business woman, cafeteria lunch lady, and drunken teacher. Each of these party ...
